Usha Silai Workshop at Seva Sadan Empowers Women Through Skill

In May 2025, Seva Sadan enthusiastically hosted a multi-week Usha Silai Workshop—a powerful initiative aimed at empowering women with tailoring skills that can lead to self-employment and financial independence.

The workshop began with the inauguration of a Training of Trainers (TOT) program, followed by in-depth technical training led by Mr. Munir, who taught participants about the structure, function, maintenance, and repair of sewing machines.

As the days progressed, participants moved from basic sewing exercises on paper and fabric, such as straight lines, circles, triangles, and squares, to more advanced skills like drafting and stitching saree petticoats, Punjabi kurtas, and various frock designs, including gathers, box pleats, A-lines, and more.

The program also introduced digital learning tools, with Mr. Paresh providing app-based training to support continued learning and access to online resources.

Over the course of two weeks, women gained hands-on experience in:

  • Garment drafting and paper pattern making
  • Fabric cutting and stitching
  • Neckline finishing techniques like piping and facing
  • Sleeve and frock construction

The workshop concluded with a certification ceremony on 27th May, where students received technical books and recognition for their dedication. Many expressed a desire to continue learning in the next batch, motivated by their newfound confidence and skills.

At its core, the Usha Silai Workshop was more than just sewing—it was about reviving hope, creating opportunity, and stitching new beginnings for every woman who took part.
