Project Sitaara: Dr. Sakeera Khan – from Ukraine to India

Published on: 15 February, 2025

The Project Sitaara session today left us all in awe. We learned about the power of resilience, determination, and the unbreakable human spirit. Dr. Sakeera Khan, a trailblazer in her own right, took center stage to share her life-changing journey that saw her overcome many odds to become a doctor.

Dr. Khan’s story is one of courage and perseverance. She completed her MBBS from two countries—Ukraine and Kazakhstan—and has faced some of the toughest challenges imaginable. Perhaps the most extraordinary part of her story is her experience of being stuck in Ukraine during the war with Russia, a situation many of us can only begin to fathom. Rather than succumbing to fear and uncertainty, Dr. Khan displayed remarkable strength in navigating the crisis. She shared how she and her fellow students were forced to confront life-threatening situations, all while trying to complete their studies. Despite the chaos and instability around her, Sakeera refused to give up on her dream of becoming a doctor. She showed up, learned, and persevered. The session took an even more inspiring turn when she spoke about her decision to return to India and take the Medical Licensing Exam (FMGE) to practice medicine in her home country. After a lot of hard work, she passed the exam successfully, marking another significant milestone in her journey.

The session was not just about a struggle or a challenge; it was about growth, resilience, and the immense power of a focused mind. The girls in the audience were completely engrossed, and it was clear that Dr. Khan’s narrative had touched a deep chord in their hearts. They were not just passive listeners—they were active participants, asking insightful questions about her life, her exams, her stay abroad, and her plans for the future. They were eager to know how she overcame such overwhelming odds, how she stayed motivated through it all, and what advice she had for them as they pursue their own dreams. The energy in the room was electric, filled with admiration, curiosity, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Dr. Sakeera Khan’s journey from being a medical student in a war zone to a licensed doctor in India is a story that will stay with us for a long time. For all the young girls present today, her story was a reminder that dreams are worth chasing, no matter the roadblocks that come your way. We hope her story will fuel the dreams of many for years to come.
